Services Review: Blockbuster Online Unlimited DVD Rentals
Blockbuster Online Unlimited DVD Rentals

After eyeing the success of Netflix, Blockbuster decided to take their business beyond their stores and throw their hat into home delivery DVD rentals. I subscribed to their service for two months and two weeks and walked away impressed with some aspects, but disappointed with others. Whether or not Blockbuster Online Unlimited DVD Rentals works for you mainly will depend on what kind of DVD viewer you are.

The Blockbuster Online Unlimited DVD Rentals plan lets you rent DVD’s without ever leaving the comfort of your own home. After signing up, you can choose which DVD’s you wish to rent. Blockbuster will then ship the three DVD’s that are highest on your list that are in stock, purportedly in one to three business days. Once you’ve finished with a DVD, you mail it back to Blockbuster with the included mailer. Once blockbuster receives back a DVD, it is crossed off your list and they ship you the next highest one on your list that is available. The first two weeks of membership are a free trial, after which you begin getting charged the monthly fee, which is currently $14.99 a month. You can cancel at anytime, but you will not receive a refund for any days left in the month you cancel.

I don’t believe I completely understood the significance of this program when I first signed up for it. I peeked around the Blockbuster site and added a handful of DVD’s to my list. A few hours later, it suddenly dawned on me how many movies and TV shows I had just been given access to. I jumped back onto the Blockbuster site, and probably spent several hours scouring their rentals for all the movies and TV showss I had wanted to see throughout my life but never got around to viewing. I was amazed at how many DVD’s Blockbuster had there. I am an avid movie fan, and watch everything from action blockbusters to low-budget foreign indie films. Only one of the DVD’s that I searched for was not in their library, and it was a foreign films. My top two choices were out of stock at first, but Blockbuster sent me number three through five on my list. Two of the DVD’s arrived two business days later, the third came after one more day passed. It took about two days for my return DVD’s to make their way to Blockbuster’s warehouse, after which time they sent me my next choices.

The first month and two weeks of my subscription was a blast. Everything was delivered posthaste, and I gorged myself on more movies than was probably healthy for my sanity. Although a fair number of the DVD’s I wanted were out of stock, I always got at least one of my top five choices. Upon entering the next month of my subscription, things changed. Netflix cut their price, and to keep up, Blockbuster lowered theirs as well. With this decreased price, however, came a noticeable drop in service. DVD’s began arriving 4-5 business days after Blockbuster received my old ones. There was even a time when Blockbuster logged one of my DVD’s as having been returned, but then did not send a new one out for two more business days. One DVD took two weeks to get to my door, but I suspect that was caused by issues with the post office, not Blockbuster. One of the DVD’s sent to me was the incorrect one, but it turned out that I had it on my list anyway, so it wasn’t that big of an issue.

I also began finding that more and more off my top choice DVD’s were out of stock, but this could just have been random luck. At one point, the top available DVD on my list was number 16. After one more month passed I decided to cancel my subscription.

Whether or not you will enjoy Blockbuster’s Online Unlimited DVD Rental service will ultimately depend on what kind of movie viewer you are. If you can watch a few movies a week without any problem, you will quickly get fed up with Blockbuster’s slow delivery. If, however, you are only a casual movie viewer, watching one or two a weekend, this system may be just for you. It’s a nice alternative to having to tromp down to your local video store, it completely eliminates late fees, and assuming you rent enough movies a month, you can end up saving money over traditional video rentals. I therefore give Blockbuster Online Unlimited DVD Rentals a Pass for the die-hard movie fans, but advise the more casual movie viewer to Give it a try.

Blockbuster Online Unlimited Movie Rentals gets 42 thumbs up.

My experience with Netflix

Four months before I started gradual school, and I was still in Queens, I decided to try Netflix (then $20/month). The first two months were fantastic - I finally got to watch several movies and shows I had always been interested in but never got around to. Turnaround time was extremely fast - only one or two days because the delivery center was located in nearby Flushing. It was definitely worth it financially - I rented enough DVDs so that they came to about $2 a pop or less, much cheaper than a Blockbuster rental.

However, problems started during month three. Netflix reported that the three Trigun DVDs on my queue had shipped. A week and a half passed, and none of the DVDs arrived. I reported them as lost using the customer service website. That same day I received an emailed apology and was told that they were reshipped. Two weeks passed, and STILL had not received any DVDs.

It took me a week of calling customer service to finally complain to a human being. The service rep was quite helpful, the Trigun DVDs were to be resent one more time, and I would get the next month free to may up for the previous month.

This time, the DVDs arrived within a couple of days. I watched them quickly, cried over Wolfwood, screamed at Vash, and returned them posthaste to make up for lost time. It was August now, and I had no intention of keeping Netflix while I was in school.

Delivery was fine for the rest of the month. When I moved, and wound up in crutches, I decided to keep Netflix a little longer. After only half of the six DVDs I requested that month made it to my mailbox (and all six were reported as shipped to my correct address), I canceled.

I'm not sure what happened. I am the only person I know who has such delivery problems with Netflix. Nine DVDs total never arrived. Most likely someone was stealing the envelopes. Pity.

With the price drop though, I'd be willing to try it again since nobody else seems to have issues.

"WARNING: AVOID BLOCKBUSTERS ONLINE AT ALL COST"

Well I was with Netflix but cancelled before the trial ended so that I didnt experience the horror stories posted here. However, I got pulled in by Blockbusters boast of better service and FREE instore rentals offer just like everyone else here. I can assure you they are no better they are also a bunch of liars and scammers. First of all in about a month I have only received 2 movies although I am on the Unlimited one at a time plan and the turnaround time is crap as was mentioned. Secondly, they are not sending my movies in the order of my Queue and some movies that they advertise on the website are either not available or they have to go elsewhere to get them. So whats the point of even having the Queue or the service? As for the free coupons well they are not incentive enough to deal with the headaches and besides that I am a member of Blockbusters Rewards which I joined at my local Blockbuster store. I only had to pay a ONE TIME $10 membership fee and I get 2 FREE RENTAL coupons for EACH MONTH for a year anyway. So to Hell with the Blockbuster Online Free rental coupons believe me they are just not worth the headache.

In addition, The center that I return movies to is in Philadephia, PA its a PO Box and less than 20 miles from me. It should never take more than 2-3 days for them to get movies. During the trial they shipped out movies to me immediately but alas as soon as I became a paying member they have only excuses and delays.

What is worse is that I contacted Customer Service to complain and threatened to Cancel my service and to deter me from doing this they put my account on hold and are not shipping me any more movies they are claiming that they didnt get the DVD that I mailed back to them over a week ago. Which is a damm lie. I have shipped previous movies to them from the same location and they always get it within a few days. I have emailed over 3 different Customer Service Reps none of them were helpful or have any clue. If you prefer to speak to a live person here is the contact number: 1-866-692-2789- customer Service

I was even told by one Rep that even if the title of the movie matches the sleeve it is my responsibility to verify that the numbers match on the sleeve and the Disc surface. Well needless to say I gave him a peice of my mind and threatened to Contact Corporate. They are in my opinion full of $#!+. And trust me I plan on cancelling and aint a damm thing they can do about it. There might be no legal entity that will stand up to Blockbuster but they are not above the Laws of this Land! I strongly advise everyone who has been victimized to contact the governmental FTC www.ftc.gov and file a complaint and to do so NOW.

Soo many customers have done this with Cingular Wireless that I heard over the news this weekend that their shady practices have finally caught up with them and they have been investigated and ordered to pay upwards of 12million dollars out because of fraudulent business dealings with Customers. Horray for Justice!! lol

In the end my strong advice to everyone even if you are considering joining for the free coupons is to just save yourself a lot of headaches and avoid Blockbuster Online altogether.

OH FYI I thought I would post the Corporate office's info and contact info. Pass this on to everyone you know who has been scammed by Blockbuster.
